LEDinside: The Number of LEDs Used in HUD is Estimated to Reach 300 Million in 2023

According to the latest report from LEDinside, “Micro-projection Technology Applied to Automotive HUD Trends,” the number of LEDs used in head up display (HUD) is estimated to reach 300 million in 2023.

HUD can be sorted into CHUD (Combiner HUD) and WHUD (Windshield HUD) depending on the types of display screens. The display screen of CHUD is a transparent Epoxy glass placed on the top of the instrument panel, which will usually be specially treated according to the imaging conditions. The glasses are generally in the shape of a wedge to avoid ghosting caused by the reflection from both sides of the glass and to effectively control cost and to improve display effects. However, the placing of CHUD above the instrument panel might cause secondary injury to drivers in vehicle collisions, causing a safety issue.

WHUD directly utilizes the windshield as its display screen, which makes the display more integrated into the interior design. But since a windshield is generally made with curved glass, WHUD has to be configured with a non-spherical reflector in accordance with the size and curvature of the windshield, which results in the higher cost of WHUD.

Currently, the main optical and mechanical design of HUD displays, according to their penetration rates, can be divided into 4 types, including DLP, LCD, LCOS and Laser Scan. Among them, DLP, LCD and LCOS are mainly used in LED applications.

As the consumers have become more aware of safety, HUD has achieved increasing penetration. Moreover, the decreased price of external-mounted HUD has pulled up the adoption of HUD.

However, as carmakers have been developing autonomous driving technology, in the future, car drivers will not be the only ones who pay attention to the road conditions and make decisions while driving; therefore the applications of HUD will decrease when self-driving vehicles begin to enter the market.
