One new company, Remco Solid State Lighting, has delved into this market with a recently patented light engine for a truly equivalent prototype street light. As the old adage suggests, seeing is believing (See the bright LED street light in the foreground).

Real LED-based lighting application replacements for existing light sources must be direct lighting replacement solutions - lumen for lumen and LUX for LUX, and offer the benefits of energy savings and reduced maintenance costs.

Conventional streetlights use a halogen high pressure sodium bulb. Even non-technical people can see the difference in a picture from the tests. Russel pointed out that despite having retrofitted a GE Cobra street light fixture with its light engine while still using the Cobra optics, the street light was able to produce more light at a greater efficiency than conventional high pressure sodium.

Mark Mathews, Remco's president and CEO stated, "What we want is equivalent useable lumens. Our Light engine is up to 98 percent power efficient. That is the key."
