Austin Energy to Test New LED Light Bulbs

2008-02-01 15: 40

Aust

in Energy is joining a national effort to develop new, energy efficient light bulbs made from LEDs. Those light-emitting diodes are commonly used in billboards and traffic signals, and new developments in the field mean they could soon be used in everyday office and home environments.

"We've arrived with a wide variety of LEDs," said Austin Energy Acting CEO Roger Duncan. "What we're going to be doing in Austin is testing these out."

New LED bulbs have already been installed in the parking garage at the One Texas Center office building. While the bulbs cost more initially that regular light bulbs or compact florescent bulbs, Duncan said they are much more energy-efficient than either of those technologies. "A 75 watt incandescent light bulbcosts $13 for the year to produce the light from that bulb," he said. "The LED that we have next to it costs only $1.79 per year to operate."
