align="justify">LIGHT emitting diode (LED) has been introduced to Swaziland by the WorldWide Energy Savers (WES) Pty Ltd. WES is a company based in South Africa known as WESLITE development.

LED is a semi conductor device that emits incoherent narrow-spectrum light when electrically biased in the forward direction of the p-n junction.

This was said by WES Director Mario Travaglini at a presentation held yesterday at Timbali lodge.

"A LED is a small area source with extra optics added to the chip that makes it emit a certain radiation pattern," said Travaglini.

Advantages

Meanwhile, Director Mike Cornwell said the main advantages of LED development is the extreme power efficiency as well as the suitability to be used with battery backup or solar power.

"with the expected power shortages in Southern Africa as well as the rest of the world, this development will be of great benefit to the economy as well as the environment," said Cornwell.

He made an example of down lighters with 50 watt halogen lamps compared to LED lamps of 3.8 watts, it is a power saving of 85 percent.
