It's reported that AU Optronics (AUO) will roll out LED TV panels in small volume this year, chiefly in the 40-inch class, but the company is still evaluating whether the TV segment will adopt a strategy as aggressive the one for notebooks as far as LED backlighting is concerned, according to Yong-Hong Lu, AUO's vice president for Global Supply Chain Management.
AUO aims to adopt LED backlighting for all of its notebook panels by the end of 2011, Lu said. But as the costs for LED TV backlighting are still an issue, AUO is still assessing the pace of LED adoption for the TV segment, he added.
Lu, speaking at Finetech Japan and Display 2008 in Tokyo, cited research firms' figures as indicating that by 2011, LED backlighting's penetration in the notebook market will reach 45%.
AUO estimates that the company's notebook-use LED adoption rate for the entire 2011 will reach 87%, well above the market average, he added.
AUO recently set up an LED Project Office, led by senior vice president David Su.
