It's reported that South Korean conglomerate LG Group plans to launch an LED light tube series in Japan in July, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Thursday without citing sources.

The product, E-Tube, was developed to easily fit into fluorescent lighting equipment commonly used in Japan.

LG group's information technology services unit LG CNS Co. has been selling LED light bulbs in South Korea, but decided to develop LED tubes for the Japanese market as an alternative to fluorescent light tubes.

The E-Tube lasts 50,000 hours, some eight times longer than fluorescent tubes, the report said.

In generating the electricity needed to power a 40-watt E-Tube for 50,000 hours, about half a ton of carbon dioxide is emitted, 50 percent of the figure for fluorescent tubes.

The LG group company hopes to be selling 1.5 million E-Tubes annually in Japan in three years, or about 30 billion yen worth ($278.2 million), the Nikkei said. ($1 = 107.84 yen)
