Everlight lands a big order for LED surgical lights

Recently, Everlight Electronics Co., a Taiwanese supplier of LEDs (light-emitting diodes), has won a big order for LED surgical lights and is scheduled to fill the order starting the second half of this year, according to company sources.

Because of adopting high-end LED chips bought from Cree Inc. of the U.S. and Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd. of Japan, Everlight has also landed orders for LEDs used in notebook PCs from Asus, Acer, Dell and HP, as well as ones in iPhone from Apple. These orders will help the firm hold its leading position in the line on the island.

Everlight noted that its shipment of high power LEDs has significantly grown this year from last year, projecting the shipment to grow further in the third quarter from the second quarter. The firm scored sales revenue of over NT$2.8 billion, up 23% from a year earlier.

The ordered LED surgical lights, which use Cree`s high power LED chips and jointly demanded by large-sized local hospitals, are valued at around NT$400 million and expected to generate an estimated gross profit rate between 40% and 50%. According to Everlight, such products require fairly advanced technology to produce and only a few of LED packaging suppliers in the world, including the firm, are capable of making the products. With more local hospitals moving to adopt the products, the market will sharply grow in the future. On the other hand, strong shipment of LEDs for low-priced notebook PCs will also prop up Everlight`s business operations in this third quarter. The firm is expected to deliver a huge number of LEDs made of Toyoda Gosei`s chips to Asustek and Acer this year, as the two world-level brands aim to sell between 7 million and 8 million budget-price laptops in the year. Accordingly, the firm is planning to boost its monthly capacity of SMD (surface mounted device) LEDs to 800 million units.

p>In the meantime, Everlight has actively ventured into production of LED backlights for 14.1 and 15.4-inch notebook PCs. The firm will start delivery of the products to Dell and HP for use in the newest, energy-saving notebook PCs in the first quarter of 2009. Also, the firm is very likely to enjoy brisk sales of LED backlights for mobile phones, due partly to orders for the products for Apple`s iPhone and partly to sharply surging orders from Nokia.
