In Philippines, The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is mulling to use energy-efficient and durable light-emitting diodes (LED) to replace bulbs in Metro Manila's traffic light system.
In a radio interview, MMDA chairman Bayani Fernando said Sunday they are now working out the details of the replacement, which he said can cut the traffic lights' electric bills by as much as 75 percent. "We can save a lot of electricity. We can change the traffic light bulbs with LEDs and save as much as 75 percent on our electricity consumption." Fernando said, on dzBB radio. “the LEDs are much more durable than the present bulbs on traffic lights, noting that LEDs can last several years while existing bulbs have to be replaced frequently.” Fernando added. The official said the MMDA will ask the Department of Energy to help fund the "transition" from bulbs to LEDs.
