Recently, Sharp Corp., Japan's biggest maker of liquid-crystal displays, will begin selling lights made based on light-emitting diode technology to establish a new earnings pillar on top of flat panel and solar cell businesses.

Sharp follows companies including Toshiba Corp. and Citizen Holdings Co. in entering the market for LEDs, which consume less energy and last longer than incandescent and fluorescent lights, are seen as promising next-generation lights as costs for power generation and concerns about greenhouse gas emissions rise.

The company introduces for starters 11 different LED lighting solutions, and the LED lights will be starting to ship in Japan on September 1st.

Accounting for 30 percent of the nation's overall lighting market, the market for LED lighting in Japan will probably climb to 300 billion yen in 2012, Sharp estimates Japan's LED light market at 10 billion yen this year, or about 1.2 percent of the overall 860 billion yen market.
