Taiwan Government Promotes to Develop LED Industries

Recently, the Cabinet in Taiwan decided to designate LED as one bellwether industries to actively develop in the near future based on a promising future for green sectors. The government is planning to encourage households to replace existing public lighting with LED lamps to save electricity.


To actively promote the iabove-mentioned green industries, Economics Minister Yin Chi-ming recently led a delegation to Japan to solicit Japanese manufacturers to invest in Taiwan to help develop green industries on the island. Yin asked Asahi Glass Co., Japan`s leading glass firm, to expand its operations by installing two more kilns in Taiwan and disclosed that the government might help provide land in the industrial zones in central and southern Taiwan to accommodate interested Japanese companies.

The government would subsidize half of installation cost for households installed, meanwhile, the government will replace 340,000 street lamps with LED ones around the island within three years, which is estimated to cost NT$1.8 billion. Besides, car lights sold in Taiwan have to use LEDs after 2011.
