FWB to install LED street signs

Recently, Fort Walton Beach's public works department plans to install lighted street signs at three busy intersections this week. Employees spent last week completing the wiring work to install the LED signs.

Public Works Director Tom Murray said “At nighttime it just makes the street name signs much more visible.” “It's very low energy because it's LED lighting and they're very, very effective lights at nighttime, that's very helpful for our visitors in the area,” Murray continued.

It’s disclosed that the city will install three signs as part of a pilot program. They will be at the intersections of U.S. Highway 98 and Beal Parkway, Hollywood Boulevard and Beal and Brooks Street and U.S. 98 near Eglin Parkway.

Fort Walton Beach budgeted $20,000 for the project, but Murray said the final cost came in less than that.

Three more lighted signs will be installed in fiscal 2010-11 at the intersections of U.S. 98 and Wright Parkway, U.S. 98 and Memorial Parkway and Memorial and Beal parkways, Murray said. If the signs prove popular, additional ones may be installed after that. "Well see how it goes. We have more major intersections than just six," Murray said. "Those are the first six major intersections we wanted to focus on with this." he added.
