OSRAM have undertaken outstanding projects that demonstrates the wide range of colours available, their versatility, their compact size and ease of installation given to architects, designers and installers. All this offers freedom to devise completely new lighting solutions, some of which can be incredibly creative and dramatic. Below are four examples of outstanding LED projects.
1. OSRAM LED sculpture welcomes visitors to London Heathrow's Terminal 5
In Sep. 2008, Heathrow’s Terminal 5 became a contemporary art gallery for two months with the BAA Expo Exhibition. Various sculptures were placed in the departures foyer and one of the landmark installations was illuminated with OSRAM SLEDs.
The ‘Arc’ as it is known was a based on the cross section of the fuselage of the A380 Airbus. It is illuminated with OSRAM LEDs and is designed to welcome travellers into the departure lounge. It has already become a landmark with many travellers having their pictures taken underneath the arch.
2. London's landmark Tower Bridge bathed in blue LED light
In Feb. 2008, as part of the Switched On London Festival Hoare Lea Lighting design and Sill Lighting lit Tower Bridge using OSRAM DRAGON-X LEDs. The lighting concept for Tower Bridge challenged the way London landmarks are currently illuminated.
Using LEDs was an energy efficient way of lighting the iconic bridge by using the latest technology, and through new design concepts, reduces the number of fittings necessary. The unique shape of Tower Bridge’s exterior had to be taken into consideration when creating the lighting design. The luminaries from Sill made the various niches and overhang a feature by highlighting them in blue light. By night the iconic bridge became a real spectacle during the festival as the seductive blue light gave this 104 year old Thames crossing a facelift.
3. Banqueting in LED style at the Langley in Watford
OSRAM colour change LEDs create the atmosphere at various functions at The Langley, Gade House. Creating a unique and 5 star banqueting experience was a top priority when The Langley, a conference centre in Watford, was being built. Lighting was a major element and the use of OSRAM LEDs was a key feature in order to create a unique dining experience.
Tan Sales worked with OSRAM on this project with bespoke luminaire designs for the banqueting rooms. The venue is used for a diverse range of functions from weddings to corporate events. LINEARlight Flex Colormix was the LED product that was selected by Tan Sales to go into the ceiling luminaires. The light colour can be changed according to the event so if a company’s corporate identity is a certain colour the luminaires can reflect this.
4. Energy savings and atmosphere are the order of the day at Vermilion and Cinnabar
The opulent Vermillion and Cinnabar is illuminated by OSRAM LEDs and Halogen Energy Savers. Vermillion is a Thai influenced restaurant and Cinnabar a concept bar built at Sports City in Manchester. This is a high class venue and required a lighting scheme to match the opulent surroundings, but which was also environmentally friendly. OSRAM Halogen Energy Savings lamps and LEDs were the ideal solution for the project.
Firefly Lighting Design was employed to create the lighting scheme and Peter Veale from Firefly pointed out that the most important features to be considered when creating the lighting project were energy saving, lamp life. This is the reason why OSRAM Halogen Energy Saving lamps were chosen as they are energy efficient, have a long lamp life and the high-quality beam angle and excellent colour rendering.
According to Peter “To create the right ambience, all solutions had to be discrete for the architectural fittings and decorative elsewhere. Adjustable downlights illuminate the dining tables and feature in the bar and waiting areas. In-ground uplights accentuate the bamboo screens in the waiting area.” With energy efficiency a top priority OSRAM Halogen Energy Saving lamps were also used in the recessed uplights around the external entrance area, many of which are within the water features. The overall spectacle is a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds complimented by the innovative lighting scheme.
