It’s reported that Philips Lumileds' latest white-light technology advancements and high-volume manufacturing of power LEDs are driving new developments in consumer electronics and illumination applications, ranging camera phones to refrigeration to task and indoor and outdoor area lighting.
The combination of Lumiramic(TM) phosphor technology and "off-state white" innovations has made LUXEON Flash the superior solution for higher resolution camera phones and more than 200 million units have been delivered to handset manufacturers. These same LUXEON innovations are enabling solid-state lighting companies to develop luminaires to meet Energy Star requirements not only for light output and efficiency but color control and consistency as well.
Lumiramic phosphor technology, already being produced in high-volume, simplifies the development of solid-state general lighting applications and ensures consistent delivery of uniformly white LEDs. LUXEON Rebel warm white LEDs also utilize Lumiramic phosphor and represent the first LED product to enable a reduction in the white binning space for LEDs which simplifies solution development.
'Off-State White' technology is providing a new appearance for LEDs when they are not in use. Typical white LEDs appear yellow when they are not powered because of the yellow phosphor material that is used to convert blue LED light to white. With clear feedback from leading cell phone manufacturers, Lumileds scientists have developed a solution that eliminates the yellow appearance when an LED is off so that it appears 'white' or 'neutral' which allows the overall appearance of the cell phone to remain consistent with the designers vision for the phone.
Ongoing improvements in LUXEON LED performance and functionality are also fueling adoption of solid-state lighting. In less than five years the company has produced six generations of LUXEON Flash products that have contributed to the continued improvement of the camera function in handsets. For illumination applications found in retail, hospitality and outdoor settings, successive generations of LUXEON LEDs have expanded LED adoption by surpassing fluorescent in efficiency; improving color control and consistency by shrinking the white binning space; improving CRI for warm white products; and ensuring supportability for high-volume applications.
The company's commitment to innovation for illumination applications has also led to the ability to use LUXEON Rebel and LUXEON K2 products in applications designed to meet Energy Star guidelines in the U.S., Part L in the U.K. and other regional standards created to ensure quality energy-saving lighting solutions.
