South Korean scientists have developed an efficient “true blue” material that can accelerate the development of next-generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

South Korea, the world’s largest producer of LCDs, is trying hard to develop more efficient OLED screens. OLED screens are pretty awesome all around, but they have more than a few Achilles Heels to overcome before they're accepted into the mainstream.

OLEDs must be made to mix green, red and blue lights. Scientists have developed efficient green and red OLED materials but they have had problems making a true blue OLED material.

The discovery was the work of Pusan National University chemistry professor Jin Sung-Ho, who said the discovery was an important one for advancing the energy efficiency of OLEDs. For gadget lovers, it's yet another piece of the puzzle that, when completed, will mean powerful, beautiful OLED TVs are a mainstay in homes across the world.
