LG Display (LGD) and AmTRAN Technology recently jointly invested in Formosa Epitaxy Inc., a Taiwan-based LED chipmaker, according to an article on Taiwan Economic News.

LG Display and AmTRAN have co-invested NT$2 billion (US$62 million at US$1:NT$33) in the LED chipmaker by acquiring 18-19% stake in Formosa, industry watchers said.

Samsung has won over 90% of the global LED TV market. According to a market researcher, though AmTRAN’s Vizio LCD TV sales topped the U.S. market last quarter, Samsung was only 0.4% behind it in market share, thanks to the fast-growing demand for LED LCD TVs.

AmTRAN plans to introduce LED-backlit LCD TVs next quarter and ramp up the production next year, according to the article.

LG Electronics, currently the world’s third largest LCD TV supplier, plans to sell via Best Buy its LH90 series TVs by the end of this year. It projects to ship three to four million TVs next year, the report said.
