[Insight] Touch Taiwan 2025: Promising Potential for Micro LED Displays and Optical Communication

Touch Taiwan 2025 took place from April 16 to 18 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center. The applications of Micro LED technology have expanded to the home theater, smart cockpit, retail, augmented reality (AR), and wearable device sectors. They offer advantages such as being lighter, brighter, more energy-efficient, and smaller. Major exhibitors included Ennostar, AUO, Aledia, WG-TECH, Contrel, PlayNitride, and Innolux. Thanks to the relentless efforts of equipment, material, panel, and branded manufacturers, products like the Samsung Micro LED TVs and Tag Heuer Micro LED watches have gone into mass production. Additionally, AUO, Leyard, Unilumin, Lenovo, Hisense, BOE, Vistar, Tianma, and JBD showcased Micro LED display applications, continually positioning Micro LED displays as a key project for long-term development in advanced displays.


According to an analysis by TrendForce, Micro LED displays span home theaters, transparent retail displays, automotive displays (including car window transparent displays, head-up displays, and morphing center controls), and AR glasses. Furthermore, optical communication products can achieve ultra-low latency and stable communication, primarily due to the use of photonic technologies to transmit data instead of traditional electronic technologies. Micro LEDs have the lowest power consumption compared to other components, making them ideal for short-distance transmissions within 10 meters, boasting a data transmission density of up to 20 Tbps/mm2 with less than 1 pJ/bit of power consumption. Potential suppliers in the optical communication market include Ennostar, AUO, Innolux, Contrel, and Unimicron.

Ennostar
Ennostar actively promotes a dual value-added strategy by upgrading its products through two main areas-markets and solutions. It is focusing on high value-added 3+1 applications, which include automotive, advanced displays, smart sensing, as well as emerging applications in optical communication and high conversion efficiency Group III-V solar cells, thereby strengthening the competitive edge of the optical semiconductors industry.

With the explosive demand from AI servers for high-speed optical communication modules, Ennostar is rapidly expanding its presence in the optical communication market by developing optical sources suited for short-, medium-, and long-range transmissions- including Micro LEDs, VCSELs, and CW DFB laser diodes. Micro LEDs offer the lowest power consumption, making them ideal for short-range communication within 10 meters; VCSELs are suited for 56 Gbps PAM4 applications; and CW DFB laser diodes are used in silicon photonics for ultra-high-speed transmissions above 1.6 Tbps.

For the Micro LED market, Ennostar has established comprehensive technical capabilities from epitaxy to mass transfer, providing both COW and COC services. To further enhance convenience in the final mass transfer process (COC 2) for end-market customers, Ennostar has introduced a new ECOC 1 temporary carrier design that delivers high yield and superior uniformity.

With the European Union mandating the installation of driver monitoring systems (DMS) in new vehicles as of July 7, 2026, the market demand for relevant technologies has rapidly increased. Ennostar’s low red glow IR LED / VCSEL solution mitigates interference with the driver’s line of sight, enabling the monitoring system to more effectively detect behaviors caused by fatigue- such as inattention, failure to look ahead, or closed eyes - thereby significantly enhancing driving safety.

Aledia
France-based Aledia has recently announced a plan to expand its production capacity, including the construction of new facilities primarily for manufacturing 8-inch LED epi-wafers. Its investors include Intel Capital, Supernova, and CEA Leti. At Touch Taiwan 2025, Aledia showcased its FlexiNOVA and Native solutions, which are designed for high-resolution displays and AR applications, respectively. Potential applications include large public displays, premium TVs, smart watches, as well as automotive dashboards and head-up displays.

FlexiNOVA features the smallest 3.5×3.5 μm Nanowire LEDs, and its blue chip’s external quantum efficiency (EQE) has been enhanced from 32% to nearly 40%. It achieves a wide color gamut display covering 99% of DCI-P3 and demonstrates exceptional wavelength uniformity of ±0.5-1 nm (compared to the industry average of ±2.5-3 nm). Furthermore, its high-voltage chip capabilities help significantly reduce power consumption. To meet various market requirements, Aledia can combine multiple Nanowire LEDs to produce Micro LED chips in sizes ranging from 3.5×3.5 μm to 15×30 μm. Using its blue Nanowire LED chips combined with QD color conversion technology, the solution achieves full-color display.

Aledia is also focusing on AR applications. Its native LEDs comprise Nanowire LED R/G/B chips on a single panel - which differs from conventional approaches based three-color light mixing - effectively reducing sizes and power consumption. This innovative design provides customers with a more compact and efficient option.

WG-TECH
WG-TECH has launched exclusive glass substrate technology featuring high brightness, high contrast, high flatness, and excellent thermal dissipation performance. This technology is specially designed for high-end displays to create ultra-thin Mini LED backlight modules with “zero optical distance,” successfully addressing the halo effect issue. The 27-inch ultra-thin Mini LED display comprises a 0.55 mm thick glass substrate, featuring 1,152 high-density dimming zones and incorporating 10,368 Mini LEDs to achieve precise light control. Hisense’s recently released Dasheng G9 display is powered by its exclusive Black Obsidian Panel technology and combines Mini LED COG with WG-TECH’s glass substrate technology. By leveraging the core advantages of high-precision glass substrates with extremely narrow line width / space, the display offers 2,304 independent dimming zones, significantly enhancing display performance compared to its counterparts. In response to the demand for wide color gamut from displays, WG-TECH has further developed its Magenta QD technology, which delivers a wide color gamut performance comparable to OLED products. By combining KSF red phosphor powder with quantum dot technology in a green film, it achieves high brightness and an impressive color gamut nearing 90% of the BT.2020 standard, while reducing power consumption significantly by 10-20%.

Regarding development of the Micro LED self-emissive display market. WG-TECH ’s products have been mass-produced in Ledman’s 220-inch 4K P1.25 Mini LED display and Mini LED displays from South Korean manufacturers. In response to the rise of micro-display LED packaging technology - MiP (Micro LED in Package), WG-TECH has launched its 0203 / 0404 MiP glass substrates. The 0203 MiP model genuinely reflects the concept of Micro LED in Package, featuring 02x02 mil (50x50 µm) Micro LED chips.

 

Contrel
Contrel is comprehensively expanding its presence in the Micro LED and advanced packaging industries. The company has developed its second-gen Laser Induced Transfer Bonding (LITB) technology, which earned the Gold Panel Awards at Touch Taiwan. This equipment combines Micro LED laser mass transfer and bonding repair in a single machine- eliminating the need for any flux or supplementary heating equipment - which greatly simplifies the production process, increases efficiency, and achieves an alignment accuracy of ±1.5 µm (compared to the industry average of ±2 µm). Its Smart & Selective Mass Repair (SSMR) technology further boosts product yield to 99.999%, effectively repairing defects and reducing rework rates to save substantial material costs.

Glass substrates - with their superior flatness, high thermal resistance, and low thermal expansion coefficient - significantly enhance the performance and reliability of silicon photonic chips for high-speed optical communication. The ultrashort pulse laser drilling equipment for Through-Glass Via (TGV Glass) is used for laser modification of TGV Glass, offering advantages such as substrate size options of 300x300 / 600x600 mm, compatibility with both infrared and green lasers for various glass materials, and applicability to glass thicknesses from 0.1 to 1.1 mm. Customers can use Contrel’s equipment to complete the TGV Glass processing for both glass interposers and glass core substrates, thereby meeting the advanced packaging requirements.

AUO
The 127-inch TV is spliced using 42 (41.6)-inch Micro LED display modules - currently the largest of their kind - featuring whopping brightness of 1,000 nits. By eliminating the need for side wiring, these 42 (41.6)-inch LTPS backplanes achieve a significantly improved yield. To date, AUO is not only supplying this model to Hisense but also has shipped samples to manufacturers in South Korea. AUO’s proprietary A.R.T. (Advanced Reflectionless Technology) minimizes reflectivity, resulting in more refined blacks as well as more vivid reproduction of other colors.

Based on AUO’s In-vehicle Computing solution, the Horizon Image Glass incorporates the dashboard, center console, and front passenger screen to provide an integrated panoramic view. This system offers passengers an unobstructed forward view while delivering essential driving information and integrated entertainment features. And the Foldable Cruise Pilot, featuring a foldable dashboard, allows the driver to freely switch between the regular driving mode and autonomous driving mode. The dashboard and steering wheel are designed to fold away, creating more room for the driver and paving the way for enhanced autonomous driving modes in the future.

The Morphing Center Control appears as a flat screen when inactive. Once activated, the display elevates and transforms into a 3D physical button, supporting multiple control modes. Leveraging the flexibility of Micro LED displays, this model enhances human-machine interaction, thereby improving driving safety.

Innolux
Innolux showcased a wide range of broader scene concepts and more in-depth applications for both Mini LED and Micro LED technologies.
The 204-inch 8K AM- Micro LED display is spliced using 256 pieces of 9.5-inch LTPS, incorporating AI technology to expand its application possibilities. Future plans include integrating sensors or edge computing components with the panel for advanced smart display capabilities. The product employs an LTPS backplane with side wiring technology, while the Micro LEDs feature blue chip with QD color conversion.

For the use of displays in weddings, Innolux partnered with boutique manufacturers to splice together eight 12.7-inch Micro LED panels, then applied a special coating on top. Leveraging the high brightness of Micro LEDs (700 nits), the system not only serves as a mirror display but also delivers a high-quality visual experience.

The 17.3-inch and 23.8-inch Mini LED maritime monitors incorporate high-performance Mini LEDs with Innolux’s industrial control edge, ensuring high-quality visuals even in high-brightness and high-temperature circumstances. They also feature real-time dynamic local dimming for enhanced contrast, boast a 5-year lifespan, and maintain touch functionality under high-temperature conditions - making them an ideal solution for harsh environments.

PlayNitride
As a leader in the Micro LED Industry, PlayNitride has continued to launch Micro LED products featuring higher specifications and relevant applications this year
AR Display : PlayNitride introduced a 0.18-inch Micro LED display, winning the 2025 Gold Panel Awards for its innovative design. Compared to its previous-generation products, the display features a size reduced by 40%, with a maximum brightness of 500,000 nits (B μLED + QD) and a color gamut covering over 90% of DCI-P3, boasting exceptional display performance. A resolution of 720x720, and an impressive pixel density of up to 5,644 ppi—meeting commercial standards. PlayNitride also plans to incorporate this display into AR glasses to meet the demand for a lightweight and high-performance solution. Watch: The 1.39-inch watch leverages PlayNitride’s proprietary Tantium high-voltage chip design (dual cell). Powered by series-connected LEDs and circuit compensation, the watch consumes 50% less energy under a brightness level of 5,000 nits, enabling broader applications in environments with high light intensity.
