Founded in 1997, Vuzix brings nearly 30 years of optical design expertise to the industry. Vuzix strategically leverages its U.S. manufacturing footprint, maintaining both R&D and manufacturing of waveguides in Rochester, New York. A pivotal turning point arrived in 2010 through a collaboration with Nokia scientists and engineers, which granted Vuzix early access to foundational waveguide patents, equipment, and processes well before the era of HoloLens. Backed by over 500 patents and an ISO 9001-certified facility, Vuzix continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in optical technology. TrendForce recently had the opportunity to interview Vuzix's Vice President of Advanced Optics, Robert Schultz, to discuss the company's development and share insights into the AR glasses industry.

Waveguide Manufacturing Advantage
Capitalizing on its extensive optical heritage, Robert told us that Vuzix offers OEM clients a seamless end-to-end waveguide solution — moving from custom design to sample delivery in under a month, far outstripping conventional industry timelines. Central to this competitive edge is Vuzix's proprietary manufacturing evolution. By refining their foundational optical technology, Vuzix has eliminated traditional wafer-size constraints, offering the flexibility to produce waveguides on discs, rectangles, or custom pre-cut glass shapes tailored to specific use cases. As a U.S.-based manufacturer with a current annual capacity of approximately one million units — which the company is actively working to double — Vuzix insulates its global customers from trade policy fluctuations and geopolitical risks while delivering superior IP security and unparalleled supply chain stability.

Optical Design Philosophy
During the interview, Robert also noted that a 30-degree field of view (FoV) remains the mainstream sweet spot, reflecting a careful balance among display brightness, lightweight form factor, and power consumption. Turning to the light source, Vuzix follows a light-engine-agnostic strategy, giving it the flexibility to choose whichever display technology best fits each application. Robert believes LCoS is having its day right now, serving as an excellent compromise between cost and performance. LEDoS, on the other hand, offers higher efficiency in brightness and power consumption, though the technology is still waiting to mature further. Lastly, OLEDoS delivers superior color performance but is primarily suited to immersive environments, and remains difficult to couple effectively into waveguides.
Enterprise and Defense Momentum
Robert emphasized that Vuzix's core development strategy centers on enterprise solutions, leveraging models like the M400 and LX1 across global warehouse, manufacturing, field service, and healthcare deployments to secure predictable revenue while avoiding the fierce price competition of consumer markets. This momentum is evidenced by major client rollouts, including Amazon's expanded M400 deployment across its fulfillment centers, alongside live commercial testing of the next-generation Ultralite Pro. Vuzix has also secured initial and follow-on enterprise orders from Augmex, and delivered its first waveguide-based display systems to a leading global automaker in Q2 2026. After temporarily divesting its defense segment, Vuzix re-entered the sector recently. Its standing as a trusted U.S. supplier has driven a steady ramp-up in this business, and defense has once again become a vital pillar for the company — anchored by key partner Collins Aerospace, whose defense program officially entered initial production deployment in Q2 2026.

The Consumer Opportunity
Looking ahead, Vuzix continues to advance its waveguide technology with an eye toward supporting the eventual rise of the consumer market. Its deep optical heritage and vertically integrated U.S. manufacturing not only underpin its current enterprise and defense business, but also position the company to capture consumer opportunities as the broader waveguide industry matures.
